This Sunday, March 27, Rainbow Church of Christ, is having Friends and Family Day. Blake Jones, our minister, is starting a new sermon series entitled “Embrace God's Grace”. Blake has a no nonsense approach to preaching that guides us to apply God’s word to our every day, day to day lives.
So, I know you are dying to ask, “Why, Angela, do you choose the Church of Christ as your church home?” I know you are interested because I had a friend ask me recently. She told me that she always had the idea that we were something like a cult because no one knew much about us and we seemed so secretive. I also know you are interested because you are reading this – gottcha!
I was born and raised in the Church of Christ. My grandparents on both sides attend the CofC. However, I do not choose the CofC to worship with because that is what we have always done. Once I reached adulthood, I studied for myself and decided that I wanted to be there. For me, the most basic reason is that I believe that the Bible teaches us that baptism is necessary. Period. If you question that, I encourage you to read the New Testament and carefully read the conversion stories and the steps to salvation.
So, why would people think the CofC is a cult or weird? There are some elements of our service that are different that most other churches. We strive to have a worship service that closely resembles the services that Jesus’ disciples held in the early church. The CofC has a lot of traditions that began because of what the first churches in the Bible did, or did not do. One of the first things you will notice is that we do not have instrumental music in our worship service. We have congregational singing that is acapella. We also partake in the Lord’s Supper each and every Sunday “as we gather together”. However, even as we strive for that early church feel, we do take advantage of a few modern conveniences. We do have air conditioning. Blake delivers his message with visual prompts like PowerPoint. And, this Sunday, you can among the first to worship in our newly redecorated facility. A leaky roof and some water damage resulted in some upgrades in decor for the first time since the 70’s – no more blue pew and no waterfall mural in the baptistery.
The other thing you will notice about Rainbow Church of Christ is the love. As we have moved, I have worshiped with many congregations, each having their own strengths. Rainbow is by far the most loving congregation I have ever been a part of. They accept people from all walks of life and encourage them to be a part of our family. So, come try us out this Sunday. We are not a cult, we are a group of people who love the Lord and worship him from our hearts. Come on in, pick up a song book, and join the singing!
