I love conversations with 5-year olds! Talon understands that we cannot ever have a cat because I am very allergic. However, he really likes cats.
Today, we were driving down the road and saw a van with one of those cute sticker sets on the back window depicting the family: Dad, Mom, boy, girl, dog, cat, cat, cat. Talon and I laughed about all those cats. Here is the rest of the conversation:
"Mom, when you die Dad and I are going to get a cat."
After a moment of thought I said, "So, I have to die for you to get a cat?"
"Well, it will be okay, because you will be in heaven. And, I will get to see you again when I go to heaven."
John Whitfield married Shanon and I in 1987. John was our youth director, friend, mentor and a surrogate Dad to Shanon. Less than a year later, John was killed in a work related accident. He had a 6 or 7 year old daughter, Jennifer. When Jennifer was told that her dad had died, Jennifer's reply was "Why are you crying, Mom? Daddy is with Jesus and that is where he always wanted to be." Wow! If I teach my kids nothing else, I want to teach them that! Being with Jesus is the ultimate goal!
